  1. The very nadir of this tradition must be a (Cockney?) farcical version, exaggerated for laughs. The few fragments that have surfaced from my memory go something like :
    “What did you eat : Eels Dear Mother …”
    “What colour was them eels … : Green and yellow …”
    “Them eels was snakes : Yugh! Dear Mother …”
    “Mother come quick, I wanna be sick, and lay me down to die …”
    I suppose the English just don’t do pathos? Sin mar a tha e, có-dhiugh.

    Thanks, BTW, for reminding me of Hard Rain, not exactly inappropriate just now, I afraid.
